Economic downturns beyond our control
really upset our plans. Years ago I was founder of a small product
development company. Through sheer determination and highly creative
approaches (because we had very little money!) we placed our products
in over 1,200 of the country’s most upscale stores – stores like
Bloomingdale’s, Nieman Marcus, Saks, Nordstrom, Macy’s, and many
more. Our small staff was working nearly 24/7 to stay on top of the
demands. Then the recession of 1989 hit… and it hit the retail industry
really hard. Almost overnight we went from a 300% annual increase
in sales…to no orders. It was a financial and emotional sucker punch to the gut. We didn’t see it coming and we had done absolutely nothing to cause it.
Sound familiar? Well, hopefully this current recession won’t hit you as hard as that one hit us. Looking back, the only thing I think I would have changed, that I had control over, was the fact that we were going it alone. We had not developed any cross-sector partnerships – partnerships that might have helped us ride-out such a difficult time.
